Thread: Caxton vs Winchester

    Caxton vs Winchester

I'm very new to Arthurian literature and have been reading some primers on Middle English to get better antiquated with the language (as well as getting Tolkien's dictionary of Middle English).

However, given my lack of knowledge of the subject, I'm confused as to which version of Le Morte Darthur to read, Caxton or Winchester? What are the relative merits of each?

I've found what seems to be considered the best original spelling modern edition of the Winchester manuscript here (the introduction and language guide alone looks like it is worth the price):
    Norton Critical Edition

Would anybody happen to know the best original spelling edition of the Caxton version?

I recommend the Penguin edition of the Caxton version

Nocturnal does plan to release a version of the Winchester manuscript sometime, but it is not available yet (obviously)

Penguin it is then. Silly of me to ask as this is the recommendation in 5.1, but just wanted to check within the general context of all the versions. Thank you for your time.
